Brentwood Needs Smart Spending and Commissioners Who Listen to Citizens

Article written by Rhea Little

Brentwood is a city that prides itself on responsible governance and fiscal discipline, and I’ve worked hard for years to uphold those values. As a longtime resident, small business owner, and public servant, I’ve always believed in limited government, low taxes, and funding essential services that enhance our quality of life.

I’m deeply concerned about the recent push by some elected leaders to spend 15 to 20 million taxpayer dollars on a luxury tennis facility. This kind of non-essential, high-cost project raises serious questions about our priorities. I’ve always made it a point to listen to and represent the citizens of Brentwood, and I believe you deserve a voice in this matter. I’m calling for a public referendum before spending more money.

Throughout my 16 years serving Brentwood, I’ve consistently fought for smart, responsible spending.

Our city’s financial strength is rooted in conservative fiscal policies. We’ve kept taxes low while maintaining high-quality services like infrastructure, public safety, and parks that benefit all residents, not just a select few. That’s the Brentwood way, and I intend to protect it.

The proposed taxpayer-funded tennis facility represents a shift away from those values. It’s an extravagant project that benefits a limited group while diverting resources from what truly matters. This isn’t about opposing recreation—I fully support Brentwood’s excellent parks and community amenities—but costly, specialized facilities should be funded through private partnerships, user funding support, or community-driven initiatives, not just your tax dollars.

I strongly believe in Brentwood’s tradition of self-sufficiency and community spirit.

We’ve always come together to support local projects in ways that don’t place an undue burden on taxpayers. The idea that the government should begin footing the bill for luxury amenities sets a dangerous precedent. If we start here, what’s next? Taxpayer-funded sports complexes? Private entertainment venues?

Fiscal conservatism means keeping the government focused on its core responsibilities—those that benefit everyone. Our city has done a remarkable job maintaining roads, protecting public safety, and preserving the unique character that makes Brentwood so special. We can’t afford to stray from that path.

The choice for Brentwood’s future is clear.

I’m running because I believe in protecting our city’s strong financial foundation, protecting our one-acre residential density, protecting our strict zoning against high density of any kind that respects your hard-earned tax dollars, and ensuring that local government remains limited, effective, and focused on the needs of all residents, not just a privileged few.

I’m asking for your support and your vote. Let’s ensure Brentwood stays true to the principles that have served us well. Early voting begins April 24, and election day is May 6—please make your voice heard and help keep Brentwood fiscally responsible and community-focused.

Sincerely,

Rhea Little
